Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Poverty has long been considered a contributing factor to crime, as individuals and communities suffering from economic deprivation are more likely to engage in illegal activities to meet their needs. In Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, rising poverty levels have been linked to an increase in crime rates, particularly among the youth population. A study by Ahmed and Mohammed (2023) found that individuals living in poverty-stricken areas often resort to criminal behavior, including theft, robbery, and even violent crimes, as a means of survival or economic gain. In Dutse, the lack of access to education, unemployment, and inadequate social services have exacerbated this issue. This study seeks to examine the relationship between poverty and crime in Dutse LGA, assessing how poverty influences the behavior of individuals and communities within the area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Dutse LGA, like many other regions in Nigeria, faces persistent poverty that affects large portions of its population. This economic hardship is compounded by a lack of access to basic necessities such as quality education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. As a result, many individuals, particularly the youth, have resorted to crime as a way to cope with their circumstances. The link between poverty and rising crime rates has become a significant issue in Dutse, yet there is limited empirical research specifically focusing on the extent to which poverty fuels criminal behavior in the area. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the role of poverty in shaping crime rates in Dutse LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To examine the relationship between poverty and crime rates in Dutse LGA.
To assess the socio-economic factors that contribute to criminal behavior in Dutse.
To recommend policy measures aimed at reducing crime through poverty alleviation in Dutse LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
What is the relationship between poverty and crime rates in Dutse LGA?
How do socio-economic factors such as unemployment and lack of education contribute to crime in Dutse?
What poverty alleviation strategies can be implemented to reduce crime rates in Dutse?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Poverty does not significantly influence crime rates in Dutse LGA.
H₁: Poverty significantly influences crime rates in Dutse LGA.
H₂: Unemployment is a key driver of criminal behavior among the youth in Dutse LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of the complex relationship between poverty and crime, providing policymakers with crucial information for developing poverty reduction strategies aimed at crime prevention. The findings will also be useful for law enforcement agencies in addressing the root causes of crime in Dutse. Additionally, the research will contribute to the broader academic discourse on poverty and crime in Nigerian local government areas.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of poverty on crime rates within Dutse LGA, Jigawa State. It will explore factors such as unemployment, lack of education, and inadequate social services that contribute to criminal behavior. Limitations of the study may include challenges in obtaining accurate data on crime rates and the socio-economic conditions of respondents, as well as the reluctance of individuals involved in criminal activities to disclose information.
